THE MIST REVIEW

THE MIST
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities

I saw Stephen King's The Mist. I'm going to be very careful how I write this because I don't want to ruin any aspect of the film so if I end up being cryptic I apologize in advance.

I was introduced to The Mist when I was 11 years old (what an 11 year old kid was doing listening to The mist is a story for another time). I read the short story and then listened to an audio adaptation of it soon after. The audio adaptation was recorded using a technique called Kunstkopf method which is essentially 3D audio. What made the audio adaptation special was the fact that it wasn't narrated but completely dramatized by actors.

Anyway, I sat down with about forty other people and was prepared to point out how Hollywood ruined the movie and how it didn't even come close to the story. Surprisingly the movie was nearly 90% true to its source material. The pacing and character development was spot on and the important plot points were accurately covered. I had a few nit picking points regarding the character of Mrs. Carmody, but going into detail would give too much away.

Anyway, The Mist gave me the most visceral movie going experiences in in a long time. There were TWO defining moments: One was a scene with Mrs. Carmody..the audience actually clapped..I'll get to the second scene in a moment.

Now at this point, I was not too sure what to expect. The short story and the audio adaptation of The Mist always left me with an ambiguous feeling, a sense of hopelessness but at the same time it peppered in just enough hope for you to walk away with your own "ending".

Now for the SECOND scene. The point came where I knew it should have ended..it was true to the story in all of its otherworldly glory..but then it kept going....and I have to say the ending of The Mist was the BALLSIEST ending I have seen in a long, long, long, long time. If you have read the story or heard the audio adaptation throw that shit out the window cause you will either LOVE or HATE the ending of the film. If you want to see The Mist as it was originally written, just get up and leave where you know you should and everything will be right with the world and you can still have your ambiguous ending. If you are a person with the guts to be challenged...then stay an extra 10 minutes.

It was funny because several people became so angry at the end and just got up when "The Deed" was done. The same people that clapped at the errrr...misfortune of another character literally got up and said, "This is so fucked up" and walked out. I couldn't believe it. If you are reading this go see the film. It is a film you NEED to see with other people. Don't go to a mid day matinée, go to a prime time show and experience one of the greatest moments in film.
